Greatness Shouldn't Cost You Everything You Love.

Pursue the extraordinary without automatically sacrificing your most important relationships.

Greatness shouldn't cost you everything you love.

Editorial takeaway

  • Greatness shouldn't cost you everything you love.

My experience

Two great loves. Why did I think I had to choose?

Sensitive passage — awaiting final author approval

My first great love was hockey: my teammates, competition, extraordinary collective goals, World Championships and the Olympic Games. My second great love was the woman with whom I imagined spending my life.

When I fell in love, some of my plans and ambitions suddenly seemed less important. I wanted to build a future together. But that also frightened me: I worried that fully committing to my relationship might stop me from achieving my sporting dreams.

At the same time I was influenced by an intense performance culture in which extraordinary achievement could seem to demand enormous personal sacrifice. The films The Adjustment Bureau and Whiplash reflect aspects of that inner conflict for me.

Based on what I myself told in coaching conversations (2023–2025), editorially summarized. The films are mentioned as editorial references only. Nobody can say whether other choices would have led to a different relationship or sporting outcome. Source: Author's supplied material (2026 masterprompt).

The essential lesson

Extraordinary ambition and a loving relationship can compete for time and attention, but the belief that you must sacrifice one for the other is often driven by fear. Honest communication makes room for both — or shows clearly when it truly doesn't fit.

03

The core principle

Greatness shouldn't cost you everything you love.

Practical lessons

  1. 1

    Examine fear-driven assumptions.

Is it really either-or, or is fear telling you that love will cost you your dream?

  2. 2

    Communicate competing priorities.

Say out loud what matters to you and when, instead of hoping the other person guesses.

  3. 3

    Respect both partners' ambitions.

A relationship holds two people with their own dreams. Greatness is not only yours.

  4. 4

Make meaningful room for the relationship.

Not only the time that is left over: plan attention as deliberately as training.

  5. 5

    Recognise genuine incompatibilities.

Sometimes lives and goals truly don't fit. Seeing that honestly is also a form of care.

  6. 6

Avoid big decisions based only on a temporary emotion.

Give strong feelings time before you make choices that are hard to undo.

Apply it

Reflection questions

  1. 1Where do you believe you have to choose between ambition and love?
  2. 2Is that belief based on facts or on fear?
  3. 3What would making real room for someone look like this week?

Editorial reflection questions, derived from the principle.

Practical exercise

  • Have an honest conversation with someone you love about both of your ambitions. What does each of you need to feel room — and closeness?
