Love Requires Boundaries and Communication
Love asks for attention, honesty, safety and mutual respect.
A lasting relationship requires mutual space, not complete self-sacrifice.
Editorial takeaway
My experience
I discuss how training, competition, and the demands of elite sport can be difficult to reconcile with expectations within a relationship. I explore how both partners can make room for their ambitions while giving each other enough attention.
Based on what I myself told in coaching conversations (2023–2025), editorially summarized. Source: Transcript, p. 24–25 en 39–40.
The essential lesson
Love and ambition need not be opposites. They do ask for honest conversations about time, attention, expectations and boundaries.
The core principle
A lasting relationship requires mutual space, not complete self-sacrifice.

Seven lessons of love
- 1
Love Gives Life Meaning.
Love is broader than romance: partners, family and friends give life a meaning that no result can replace.
- 2
Love Requires Attention.
Real attention means being present, listening and noticing what the other person needs — not only giving the time left over after training or work.
- 3
Love Needs Safety.
People open up when they feel safe: free from ridicule, threats or fear. Without safety, honesty becomes impossible.
- 4
Love Requires Responsibility.
Own your words, moods and actions, apologise when needed and follow through on what you promise.
- 5
Love Needs Boundaries.
Healthy boundaries protect both people: what you need, what you can give and what you will not accept.
- 6
Love Requires Emotional Maturity.
Recognise your triggers, pause before reacting and share feelings without attacking the other person.
- 7
Love Is a Practice, Not a Destination.
Love is not something you achieve once. It is practised every day, through small choices of care, honesty and repair.
Communication and difficult conversations
Communication, mutual respect, accountability, emotional availability and honesty make it possible to discuss what is hard: time, attention, expectations and each other's ambitions.
Not every relationship can or should be preserved. Sometimes clear communication reveals genuine incompatibilities — and recognising them can also be an act of respect.
