Believe Before You See

Believe before you see it

See the possibility clearly enough to act as if it matters.

01

My experience

As a boy I watched the Olympics and wondered why Belgium did not have a successful team on that stage. Long before there was any evidence that I would become part of such a team, the image existed in my head.

Years later, even before I became world champion, I wrote on my wall: I am a world champion. At that point, it wasn't a fact. It was a statement of direction. I wanted to see the possibility so clearly that I would behave in a way that moved towards it.

Faith also had a personal form for me. My father taught me a prayer as a child. Later he told me that he did it because it was one of the few things that made me calm down. For games and in moments of doubt, prayer gave me a way to calm my head.

None of it replaced training. Faith scored no goals, completed no physical tests and won no tournaments. But faith did influence whether or not I showed up for those things.

02

The essential lesson

Often you have to act before you have proof. Those who demand certainty before devotion never begin many meaningful goals.

03

The core principle

Faith is not pretending success is guaranteed. It is choosing to take a meaningful opportunity seriously enough to work for it.

A strong image changes your attention. You begin to notice information, people, habits, opportunities and weaknesses that were always there, but previously felt irrelevant.

Faith also requires modesty. You can believe deeply and yet be wrong about timing, method or outcome. The useful form of faith is not arrogance, but dedication combined with learning.

04

Apply it

Reflection questions

  1. 1What possibility do you not take seriously enough to work for it?
  2. 2What would the person who achieve that outcome look like?
  3. 3What's the next action that makes your target more likely?

Editorial reflection questions, derived from the principle.

Practical exercises

  • Write down one meaningful outcome you want, in concrete language.
  • Describe the person who can achieve this: habits, standards, skills, relationships and character.
  • Visualize the process, not just the stage.
  • If in doubt, ask not only Is this gonna work? .
  • Keep faith connected to work.
