Take Responsibility

Neem verantwoordelijkheid

You can't control everything, but you're responsible for your next move.

01

My experience

School was one of my first mirrors. It was often said that I had potential, but potential was not self-fulfilling. I could be distracted, disorganized and volatile. A short break could lead to hours of ping-ponging. Homework became a last-minute crisis, and then I felt guilty. Because I knew I had created the problem myself.

When I later left the regular school path and had to organize more by myself, there were fewer places to hide. My choices became more visible.

Sports made that lesson even sharper. At the highest level, apologies have little value. If your body is not ready, your preparation is weak or you lose your focus, someone else can take your place. I learned that pressure doesn't create your habits; She's exposing them.

02

The essential lesson

Responsibility begins when you stop letting your progress depend on someone else who needs to change first.

03

The core principle

Taking responsibility doesn't mean pretending circumstances don't matter. Coaches, teammates, family, health, opportunities, timing and happiness matter. Responsibility means finding the part that's still yours.

That distinction gives energy back to action. When I wonder what I can improve, I move again.

Responsibility is also the basis of self-respect. Every promise you make to yourself builds trust. The goal is not perfection, but to reduce the distance between insight and adjustment.

04

Apply it

Reflection questions

  1. 1What part of your current challenge is still really yours?
  2. 2What promise to yourself will you keep this week?
  3. 3What behaviour becomes visible when the pressure rises?

Editorial reflection questions, derived from the principle.

Practical exercises

  • Divorce in adversity what was outside and what was within your control.
  • Name one behavior with which you yourself contributed to the problem.
  • Correct one thing immediately instead of designing a perfect future plan.
  • Build routines that reduce the number of decisions under pressure.
  • Measure yourself by behavior that you can repeat, not by promises that make you emotional.
