Go 100% on Your 1%
Full commitment at a low chance
Put yourself fully into the possibility, without pretending the outcome is established.
Editorial takeaway
- 1% is all we need.
- The 1% was the opportunity. The new 100% was the transformation.
My experience
1% is all we need.
Sensitive passage — awaiting final author approval
During my rebuilding period, after falling outside the established national-team selection, I began pursuing what felt like an extremely small opportunity to return to the team and potentially reach the Paris Olympics.
I understood the possibility to be approximately 1%. When friends asked why I was training for Paris despite the very small opportunity, I explained that one percent was all we needed.
The philosophy is not that every one-percent opportunity is worth pursuing at any cost. For me, this particular possibility became a reason to invest in physical, mental, emotional and personal development. The one percent was an opportunity to build something meaningful.
Based on what I myself told in coaching conversations (2023–2025), editorially summarized. Source: Transcript, p. 1–2, 676–677.
In my own words
I had plenty of reasons to stop. My body had been through an enormous amount. My sporting future was uncertain. My chance of making the national team again and reaching the Olympic Games in Paris was extremely small.
People talked about roughly one percent. But when friends asked me why I was still training for Paris, I answered that one percent was all we needed.
Not because I knew I would be selected. Not because hard work could guarantee a particular outcome. But because that small chance gave me a reason to invest fully in my own development again.
I wanted to discover what was still possible. And at the same time I wanted to build something that would remain valuable, whatever the final selection.

The essential lesson
A small chance doesn't mean you don't have a meaningful choice anymore. You can control your preparation and commitment, but not guarantee the selection or result.
The core principle
Put yourself fully into the possibility, without pretending the outcome is established.

Five lessons
- 1
A small possibility can still matter.
- 2
Commitment does not require certainty.
- 3
Focus on what you can influence.
- 4
Build something valuable along the way.
- 5
Know when to adapt or reassess your goal.
The 1% is my approximate perceived sporting opportunity — not a calculated probability or a medical assessment. Perseverance does not guarantee selection or success.
Apply it
Reflection questions
- 1What small chance does your full commitment deserve?
- 2What is within your influence, and what is not?
- 3How would you feel if you gave everything, regardless of the outcome?
Editorial reflection questions, derived from the principle.
Practical exercise
- Make two columns: "What I can determine" and "What I can't determine." Choose from the first column one action in which you put one hundred percent this week.
