Build Around People
Building around people
Become someone who makes the people around them stronger.
My experience
I've never experienced performance as a purely individual story. My family gave me a safe haven. My parents believed in me, supported my choices and created a place where I could return when the outside world became difficult.
Teams taught me the other side of relationships. Being surrounded by talented people is not enough. A team can have talent and yet suffer from lack of trust, fear of conflict, weak involvement or losing sight of the collective outcome.
Service turns the atmosphere into a team. The smoothies were a small example, but they changed me. Instead of sticking around in frustration after practice, I did something useful for someone else. The strongest team moments were those in which the individual ego became subordinate to the mission.
The essential lesson
Your potential is shaped by the quality of the relationships around you and by the quality you bring into those relationships.
The core principle
Strong relationships aren't just built on encouragement. They ask for trust, honesty, contribution, forgiveness, limits and difficult conversations.
A useful shift is less often asking What do I get from these people? What do I contribute to this environment? Service is not submission. Trust is not blindness.
The paradox: often you perform better individually when you are less concerned with yourself.
Apply it
Reflection questions
- 1What do you contribute to the environments in which you live and work?
- 2What conversation are you postponing that's better now?
- 3Who could help you this week without expecting recognition?
Editorial reflection questions, derived from the principle.
Practical exercises
- Name the five people or environments that affect you the most.
- Wonder if each relationship strengthens honesty, discipline, energy and growth.
- Do one useful thing for your team or family without needing recognition.
