STATE — Build Your Way Back.

What if the state you need feels impossible?

Respond to the situation you are in, not to the state you wish you had.

Editorial takeaway

  • You don't have to be in a peak state to take the next step.
  • You don't have to feel unstoppable to take the next step.

My experience

What if the state you need feels impossible?

Sensitive passage — awaiting final author approval

I attended Tony Robbins' Unleash the Power Within. His teachings about STATE became especially meaningful during my most difficult years.

Before my major setbacks, I was accustomed to feeling confident, energised and capable of influencing matches. After my concussion and the accumulation of injuries, emotional setbacks and sporting uncertainty, that familiar state became much more difficult to access.

I understood how important my physical, mental and emotional state was to my performance. But knowing the state I wanted did not mean I could immediately experience it. At times, the gap between my actual condition and my desired state felt almost impossible to overcome.

Based on what I myself told in coaching conversations (2023–2025), editorially summarized. Source: Author's supplied material (47-principle masterprompt).

In my own words

I knew what it felt like to step onto the hockey pitch with extraordinary confidence. To feel that I could create something special.

But after my concussion and all the setbacks that followed, that state became harder and harder to reach.

I could tell myself to think positively. I could visualise how I wanted to play again. But that didn't mean I actually felt that way.

I began to understand that my challenge wasn't simply to summon more energy every day. Sometimes I needed action. Sometimes rest. Sometimes recovery. Sometimes a good conversation.

And sometimes just a small step that was achievable from the state I was in at that moment.

02

The essential lesson

Your state shapes your performance, but you cannot always switch it on. Choose the next step that is possible from where you really are.

03

The core principle

You don't have to be in a peak state to take the next step.

Tony Robbins' Emotional Triad

  1. 1

    Physiology.

Movement, breathing, posture and physical condition.

  2. 2

    Focus.

    Where attention is directed.

  3. 3

    Language.

How experiences and possibilities are described.

Chapter I — State → Story → Strategy

Tony Robbins connects the state you are in with the story you tell yourself and the strategy you choose. They are interrelated coaching concepts, not inflexible neurological laws.

Chapter II — My addition

You don't have to be in a peak state to take the next step.

Sometimes the appropriate state is energetic. Sometimes it is calm. Sometimes it requires patience, support or recovery.

The objective is not to be permanently switched on. It is to respond more appropriately to the situation you are in.

Changing posture, focus or language cannot instantly resolve serious exhaustion, illness, concussion or psychological difficulties. Consult a qualified professional when needed. The Emotional Triad and State → Story → Strategy are attributed to Tony Robbins; this site is not affiliated with him.

Reflection questions

  1. 1What state do you actually need today: energy, calm, patience or recovery?
  2. 2Which story are you telling yourself about your state?
  3. 3What is the smallest meaningful step from where you are?

Editorial reflection questions, derived from the principle.

Practical exercise

  • Rate nothing — just describe: how does your body feel, where is your focus, which words are you using? Then choose one small step that fits that state.

My next step

The Coach's Lens

Saying out loud how I really felt — physically, mentally, emotionally — was often the first step toward knowing what I needed.
